As part of the partnership between Spanish Readers at UniPiaget, UniCV and the Spanish Embassy in Cape Verde, they celebrated International Poetry Day and World Book Day in a very special event at UniPiaget: The “Certamen de Poesía en Español de Cape Green".
This “Certamen”, which is now in its second edition, was attended by the following authorities, who presided over the event. The Ambassador of Spain, Ana Paredes Prieto, highlighted the importance of Spanish in the world and, specifically, in Cape Verde. The Magnificent Rector of UniPiaget, Doctor Joanita Rodrigues, showed her satisfaction with the activity plan developed by the Reader to date and boded an excellent perspective for Spanish at UniPiaget; equally, as a lover of poetry, she brought surprises to the winners. Finally, the Pro-Rector of UniCV, Doctor Fátima Fernandes, highlighted the impact of the Spanish Readership programs implemented in the country, as well as the value of the work carried out by readers from both universities, creating inter-university ties around Spanish.
After the call for entries, the different participants sent their poems anonymously. Around 30 works were received and judged from Spain for their stylistic and emotional quality, choosing a total of 15 from the best to be recited on the day of the Ceremony on April 18th in the Auditorium of our University.
The deliberation of the jury, composed of the Consul of Spain, Fernando Criado, and the Spanish Readers in Cape Verde, Dr. Alicia Solís (UniCV) and Dr. Rebeca Castañer (UniPiaget), was not at all easy, due to high quality of interpretations. Three ex aequo prizes, of the same category, were awarded to Adilson Semedo, Alessandro Rocha and Vânia dos Santos, and two special mentions, one to Melissa Almeida for her poem in honor of the Spanish author Federico García Lorca, and another to the artist Cabo- Verdiana Tete Alhinho, present at the event, for her poem “Creación”.
The Master of Ceremonies, Miriam Andrade, a fourth-year LTI student at UniPiaget, presented each of the activities and surprises, with the help of the Spanish Embassy collaborator, Lucía Mínguez, such as the delivery of a rose and a book to each participant.
These activities aim to foster literary creativity in Spanish and promote artistic expression through art, in this case poetry, without forgetting students as a fundamental part of cultural projects in Spanish. In honor of the Hispanic women of letters, it is worth highlighting the video edited by the UniPiaget Communication and Image Office, in which they appear reciting verses by several students from both universities, as well as collaborators from the Embajada de España in Cape Verde. The video, which was shown at the beginning of “Certamen”.
The act was a success, had a large participation and had a large audience following. From now on, we are waiting for the following editions of the event!
